Bodies of love

God, how I love bodies!

I’ve said it before and I will say it again (and again, and again!): our bodies are what make us human. No human body, not human - it’s that simple. And these bodies come in such a dazzling variety, too! I love them all, the young, the old, the slim and the not-quite-so-slim. It’s just such a miracle that we have been given these magnificent vehicles so we can have this brief sojourn in material-reality-such-as-we-perceive-it.

Personally, I realise I’ve been blessed with a perfectly functional body, that has stayed more-or-less the same over time, allowing me to fully settle in. I’ve grown very attached to my body, but that is besides the point. The point being, the purpose of our human journey is to learn: learn what is this mystery we call ‘reality’ and how we can sweep aside the veil of human perception and travel into the great beyond.

I’m not young anymore (thank heavens!), and my body has lost its youthful splendour, and yet I feel I’m getting closer to understanding something that has hitherto eluded me: that the way into the mystery is through the body. And I don’t mean that in a yoga kind of way, but rather in an acceptance kind of way. Once you realise that these bodies are vehicles, you can concentrate on the journey; and ultimately on the destination.

Now what’s ‘the destination’? I believe it’s what alchemists called ‘The Great Work’. Striving for spiritual transformation, shedding pre-conceived ideas, and understanding the union of opposites. Ultimately, the goal of The Great Work is to achieve transformation, such as by complete self-realisation, and knowing there is no separation from the divine. The Great Work is never done, the transformation never ends. The journey is the destination.

These magnificent bodies of ours, they’re here to show us the mystery of transformation, so that we can understand that at the end of our days, there will be a new transformation for us to enjoy.
